Mason, TX is known as the “Gem of the Hill Country” and the only place in Texas where you can find Texas Topaz in nature. But if you day trip here, you’ll find that the whole town sparkles with culture, history, great people and excellent food. Fort Mason sits atop a hill with the best view in town.
A central location of the Texas Hill Country. The old time small town of approximately 2,290 people with the most beautiful town square in Texas. There are 10 wineries in Mason, all but three are located on the square. Also located on the square are restaurants, antiques, Air B&B’s and the Odeon Theatre, the oldest working movie theatre in Texas. There are also restaurants located close by that are off the beautiful historic square. Mason was the home of Fred Gipson, author of “Old Yeller” which was made into the 1957 Walt Disney film which premiered at the Odeon Theatre in Mason. The famous Original Cooper’s Pit Bar-B-Q is also located in Mason.
Masonites are very proud of their young athletes as well. They are well known for their sporting achievements, especially football and tennis. The Mason Puncher football team always seem to go far into the playoffs every year and in the last decade went to the state championship three years and won two state championships. Mason is also very well known for its tennis program. In 1976, Sports Illustrated declared Mason the “Tennis Capital of Texas” and they even have an exhibit of “The History of Tennis in Mason” in the Mason Square Museum.
A must see is the Seaquist House, built in 1887 located just north of the historic courthouse square. They offer public tours on the first Saturday of every month with private tours also available.
Mason is named after Fort Mason, which was established in 1851 and is located in the county. Fort Mason was Robert E. Lee’s last command post in the US Army.
